South Gaston Labor Day 5K & Y Race Series

South Gaston Labor Day 5K & Y Race Series

Join us for the 1st Annual YMCA Labor Day 5K!

Monday, September 1st @ 8:00am

Kick off your Labor Day with the inaugural South Gaston Labor Day 5k. Runners start and finish at the Forestbrook Shopping Center and wind through the Gaston Country Club area. Don’t pay attention to the giant hill near the end! The race is the 4th event for the Gaston Cup and 3rd in the Y Race Series.

5K (INCLUDES  T-SHIRT) Fees:

» $25 through August 25th, $35 from August 26th-31st. $5 additional the day of the race if space available. Limited to 500 participants.

Other Details:

Awards will be given to the first overall male & female runners, and  five year increments for male and female runners.

When and where is  early packet pickup?

Early packet pick up will be Saturday, August 30th  at Run Walk Belmont, 200 N. Main Street in Belmont,  from 10AM-3PM.  Day of race packet pick up will be at the South YMCA from 6:00-7:30AM.

Can I walk the 5K?

The 5K is open to walkers and runners alike. We will not have an awards division for walkers.

Can I wear headphones, run with my pet or push a baby stroller?

Headphones are allowed, but please be aware and cautious of your surroundings. We try to lessen as much traffic as possible, but realize we cannot close off traffic 100 percent. Strollers are allowed, pets are not.

My family wants to volunteer. How can they?

Sign up on our online form coming soon. Volunteers will a receive t-shirt, snacks, and lots of love from the YMCA.

Where does my hard earned money go for this race?

Your fees support  the YMCA Annual Campaign. Through public support and contributions to the Gaston County Family YMCA and its branches, we are able to provide access to quality programs and services to everyone regardless of ability, gender, age, or socio-economic status. We thrive on serving as many people in the community as possible, but cannot do so without your help. Every day nearly 100 programs and services help shape our neighborhoods, but the call for assistance keeps growing.


Fall Youth Soccer

Fall Youth Soccer

Join the Gaston County Family YMCA for Fall Soccer 2014. Our recreational league is in our third season of a new curriculum with proven success, and backed by Belmont Abbey College Soccer Coaches!  This program allows children to progressively develop their skills with smaller team sizes, professional practice plans for coaches, and more opportunities for each child than ever before.  We focus on family involvement, team building, confidence, and developing our core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.  Register online or download the form below.

Ages
Children ages 3 – 12 will play in the following leagues: Under 5, Under 7, Under 9, and Under 13 years old.  Registration is open until August 28th.  Late registration will result in a $10 late fee if space is available.

When and Where
Practice begins the week of September 8th, and games will follow beginning August 15th. Practice takes place twice weekly on Monday or Tuesday and Saturday for one hour.  After the first week of practice, all weekday practices will include half practice and half game, and all Saturday practices will include half practice and half game.  All games will take place at the Pharr Family YMCA at 208 Main Street, McAdenville.

Coaches
We need volunteer coaches in every age group.  Please consider coaching a team this season by indicating your interest on your registration form.
  • Coaches Only Meeting is on Tuesday, September 2nd at 7:00 pm at the Pharr YMCA in McAdenville.
Uniform Provided
All players will receive a uniform top and socks.  Your child will need shin guards as they are not provided.

Lifeguard Certification

Lifeguarding

Lifeguarding is an important lifesaving skill in every community. Complete a lifeguarding course available this at the Central YMCA with possible employment opportunities upon completion. The participant will receive life guarding, first aid, CPR for the professional rescuer, and Automated External Defibrillator.

Prerequisites — Mandatory swim test includes—300 yard swim (front crawl and breast stroke), jump in and swim 20 yards to retrieve and return a 10 lbs. brick, tread water with feet only for 2 minutes. Attendance mandatory at all session dates and 15 years  old by the date of the last class.

Session: August 8, 9, 10

8th & 9th –  4:00 – 9:00 p.m.

10th – 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Cost: Members – $180.00  Program Participants – $230.00

Grizzlies 5K & Y Race Series

Grizzlies 5K & Y Race Series

Join us for the 2nd Annual Grizzlies 5K!

Friday, July 18th @ 6:00pm

Kick off the Gastonia Grizzlies Midnight Madness double header  baseball game & fireworks with the second annual Grizzlies 5k. Runners start in the outfield of Sims Park, wind through the North Gastonia Greenway, and finish at home plate. All runners will receive a game ticket, t-shirt, and all the entertainment that evening. The race is the 3rd event for the Gaston Cup and 2nd in the Y Race Series.

Summer Gymnastics Classes

Summer Gymnastics Class Schedules (June, July, and August)

Ages:
Kindergym for ages 3 & 4.
JuniorGym for ages 5, 6, & 7
SeniorGym for ages 8-11.

YMCA Gymnastics is a class for boys and girls with age appropriate skills in tumbling, floor exercises, bars, vault, and beams! Rolls, handstands, cartwheels, and other fundamental floor exercises are taught all in a fun and non-competitive atmosphere.

All class are held at the Pharr YMCA.

Registration: Open
Please register your child and they will be placed in a class that suits their skills.  Preferences do not gurantee class days and times.

Days & Times:
Classes are on Mondays and Thursdays and run from 3:oo pm through 6:45 pm. Each class is 45 minutes long.

KinderGym: Mondays at 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm.  Thursdays at 3:00 pm.

JuniorGym: Mondays at 3:00 pm, 3:45 pm, 4:00 pm, and 6:00 pm.  Thursdays at 3:00 pm, 3:45 pm, and 4:30 pm

SeniorGymMondays at 4:30 pm.  Thursdays at 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm

Intermediate/Advanced ClassMondays at 5:15 pm, and Thursdays at 5:15 pm.

Class fees: Non-refundable registration fee $20.00 per student

Learning Opportunities

The Stowe Family YMCA is now offering 3 special classes just for our Toddlers! Join us for one or more of these excellent monthly sessions.  Join us for an OPEN HOUSE on March 24, 26, and/or 28th for a free look at the classes.  

What/When: 

Art Classes – Little Picassos on Monday, Wednesday 8:55 – 9:55 am

Literacy Classes – Literary EDventures on Monday, Wednesday 10:00 – 11:00 am

Sports + Swim Classes – Rookie Sports and Swim on Friday 9:00 – 11:00 am

All classes are intentionally structured with the goal of fostering a passion for learning, discovering new skills, and building confidence through interaction.

Cost:

$45 a month for Members

$55 a month for Program Participants

Youth Swim Lessons

Ages: 6 years +

Youth Swim Lessons promote stroke development, personal water safety, water sports, rescue and personal growth are included. During all swim lessons, participants and instructors find opportunities to learn and demonstrate the YMCA core values, (Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility and Faith).

Summer Camp

Say Hello to Summer!

Camping, like many Y programs, is about learning skills, developing character and making friends. But few environments are as special as camp, where kids become a community as they learn both how to be more independent and how to contribute to a group as they engage in physical, social and educational activities.

The Gaston County Family YMCA offers five camp locations throughout the county during the 10-week summer following the Gaston County Schools calendar.

Parents Night Out

Ages: 3 years through 5th grade

Once a month the YMCA is THE PLACE for kids! Kids can enjoy an evening at the YMCA while keeping busy with actives such as swimming, baking, playing games, eating dinner, and being silly while their parents are out and about!

Registration: Stowe Family YMCA 2nd Friday of each month, South YMCA 4th Saturday of each Month.

Parents Day Out

What is Parents Day Out?

Parents Day Out is our annual program for your potty-trained 3 year old to 5th grader. It’s a chance for you to take a breath, shop child-free, and/or prepare for the Holidays. We’ll take your child off your hands for a few hours. They’ll get to hang out with their friends while being entertained and supervised by our youth staff.

We will craft, swim, play games, and eat lunch together!

When is Parents Day Out?

Parents  Day Out is on Saturday, December 7th at the STOWE FAMILY YMCA from  9:00 am —1:00 pm.

Cost:

Members- $15 Program Participant- $25

*There is a $5 fee for registration after Wed, Dec. 4th

Afterschool Enrichment

Ensuring A Brighter Future

The YMCA provides a quality, Christian-oriented experience that is safe, fun, and convenient. Y After School operates throughout Gaston County providing enrichment from school dismissal until 6:00 pm daily. During this time we aim to shape character by modeling, teaching, and reinforcing positive values to all students. The YMCA believes in the character development traits of Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Faith. The YMCA offers two on-site After School locations and fifteen off-site locations throughout the county.
