National Day of Prayer Breakfast

On May 7th, the Gaston County Family YMCA will celebrate its Annual Community Prayer Breakfast with an inspirational morning of fellowship, music and prayer at First Presbyterian Church of Belmont.
At the Y, we believe that faith in the power of prayer is at the heart of our community. Whether you’ve never turned to prayer or you pray daily, we welcome you to join your community in prayer. At the breakfast, we will lift up the prayers of our community.
Doors open for breakfast at 7:00 AM and the program will begin at 8:00 AM. Find location information here.

Gastonia Grizzlies 5K & Y Race Series
Join us for the 3rd Annual Grizzlies 5K!
Friday, July 17th @ 6:00pm
Kick off the Gastonia Grizzlies Midnight Madness double header baseball game & fireworks with the third annual Grizzlies 5k. Runners start in the outfield of Sims Park, wind through the North Gastonia Greenway, and finish at home plate. All runners will receive a game ticket, t-shirt, and all the entertainment that evening.
Course map here Note: The race starts in right field and ends with a 1/4 mile run around the inside of the baseball field.
5K (INCLUDES T-SHIRT and GAME TICKET) Fees:
» $25 through July 11th, $35 after July 11th, if space available. Limited to 500 participants.
Awards will be given to the first overall male & female runners, and five year increments for male and female runners.

When and where is early packet pickup?
Early packet pick up will be Thursday, July 16th at Walk & Run Belmont, 200 N. Main Street in Belmont, from 1-6PM. Day of packet pick up will be at Sims Park from 3-5:30PM.
Can I walk the 5K?
The 5K is open to walkers and runners alike. We will not have an awards division for walkers.
Can I wear headphones, run with my pet or push a baby stroller?
Headphones are allowed, but please be aware and cautious of your surroundings. We try to lessen as much traffic as possible, but realize we cannot close off traffic 100 percent. Strollers are allowed, pets are not.
My family wants to volunteer. How can they?
Sign up on our online form here. Volunteers will a receive t-shirt, snacks, and lots of love from the YMCA.
Where does my hard earned money go for this race?
Your fees support the YMCA Annual Campaign. Through public support and contributions to the Gaston County Family YMCA and its branches, we are able to provide access to quality programs and services to everyone regardless of ability, gender, age, or socio-economic status. We thrive on serving as many people in the community as possible, but cannot do so without your help. Every day nearly 100 programs and services help shape our neighborhoods, but the call for assistance keeps growing.

Camping, like many Y programs, is about learning skills, developing character and making friends. But few environments are as special as camp, where kids become a community as they learn both how to be more independent and how to contribute to a group as they engage in physical, social and educational activities.
The Gaston County Family YMCA offers four camp locations throughout the county during the 10-week summer following the Gaston County Schools calendar.

Spring Break Camp
Spring Break Camp
The YMCA offers full day care during extended school breaks at both the Central and Stowe YMCA locations which includes Spring Break. Full Day care will be provided for all registered at either a daily or multi-day rate.
Students registered for After School and/or Summer Camp at the YMCA are not automatically registered or charged for this program. Specific Registration is necessary.

The camp day is from 7:00 am until 6:00 pm daily.

Personal Training (Private)
Private personal training is 1 on 1 fitness training with a nationally certified YMCA personal trainer. The trainer trains the client using strength training, cardio training, and nutritional counseling and monitoring. Sessions are 1 hour in length and can be purchased in 1, 5, 10, 15 and session packages.
Dates & Times: Anytime the facility is open and is offered year around. Training times are based on client needs and trainer availability.

Personal Training (Small Group Classes)
A group personal training class is personal training in a small group setting. The session length is determined by the class specifics and what it dictates the length to be in order for the clients to achieve their goals. Classes are created based on specific branch need and want and trainer experience and availability.
Offered to YMCA members only and must have a minimum of 4 participants and a maximum of 10 in order to have the sessions.
Dates & Times: Anytime the facility is open and is offered year around. Training times are based on client needs and trainer availability. Classes are 4 to 8 weeks in length depending on specific class.
Sessions – $10 per session per client and must be paid in full prior to start of class sessions. For example, if the class meets 2x per week for 4 weeks the total cost to the member is $80 and this must be paid prior to the start of the 4 week program.

Jr Lifeguarding is designed to guide youth to become Lifeguards by building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills needed for future Lifeguards. For youths 11-14 years old.
Classes are offered both at the Central YMCA in Gastonia and the Stowe Family YMCA in Belmont.
- Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.
- Swim the breaststroke for 25 yards using a pull, breath, kick and glide sequence.
- Tread water for 1 minute and show a level of comfort by floating on back for 30 seconds or back crawl 25 yards.
- Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater.

The Gaston Cup
Run with Purpose
The 2nd Annual Gaston Cup focuses on corporate health and wellness. The Gaston Cup Series provides businesses with a long-term initiative that helps establish healthy lifestyle changes for their employees.
Micro, Small , Medium and Large businesses complete in a series of run/walk races throughout the year. The business with the highest employee participation percentage will win their category Gaston Cup for that year.

Lifeguard & Water Safety Instructor Certifications
Lifeguarding is an important lifesaving skill in every community. Complete a lifeguarding course available this at the Stowe YMCA with possible employment opportunities upon completion. The participant will receive life guarding, first aid, CPR for the professional rescuer, and Automated External Defibrillator.
Prerequisites — Mandatory swim test includes—300 yard swim (front crawl and breast stroke), jump in and swim 20 yards to retrieve and return a 10 lbs. brick, tread water with feet only for 2 minutes. Attendance mandatory at all session dates and 15 years old by the date of the last class.
4 Session Available: March 12th-14th, April 6th-8th, May 14th-16th, June 11th-13th
Cost: Members – $180.00, Program Participants – $230.00
Lifeguard Review Class: For Lifeguards whose certifications are about to expire. Upon successful completion this class will renew their certifications for 2 more years

Water Safety Instructor Certification
Being safe in and around the water is an important skill to learn and share with others. This class will prepare participants to teach swim lessons to children and adults as well as other water safety courses. Possible employment opportunities upon completion.
Prerequisites — Swim various strokes for 25 yards, including butterfly, tread water for 1 minute. Participants must be 16 years old by the date of the last class

Lifeguard Instructor Certification
The purpose of the instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Waterfront Skills, Waterpark Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission courses and/or modules. Instructor candidates will also become familiar with Junior Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Management, Safety Training for Swim Coaches and Basic Water Rescue.

Ages: Middle School Students
Join the Stowe Family YMCA each month for an evening of dancing, basketball, video games, and more! The Y is just for teens! We will offer a dance, basketball and/or dodgeball tournaments, video games, pizza, snacks, swimming for all who attend from 8:00 pm – 10:30 pm.

Swim Lessons – Youth
Ages: 6 – 13 years
Youth Swim Lessons promote stroke development, personal water safety, water sports, rescue and personal growth are included. During all swim lessons, participants and instructors find opportunities to learn and demonstrate the YMCA core values, (Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility and Faith).
