Join us for this session of Adult Swim Lessons. This session will instill confidence in and around the water. We have highly trained instructors that will work with you at your own pace. Enjoy learning how to swim in a no pressure atmosphere.

Group Swim Lessons – 6 months – 14 years

Group Swim Lessons

The Stowe Family YMCA offers progressive Red Cross Learn to Swim Classes for children from ages 6 months to 14 years. We  emphasize skill development, water safety and having fun in a safe and friendly environment with programs that meet the needs of each student. Student learn at different rates and are usually in each level more than once, classes are divided into ability groups with a small teacher to student ratio.  Trained instructors emphasize personal safety, swimming skills, endurance and social skills, guiding students with praise and encouragement.

 Ages: 6 months – 14 years.

Classes: 8 lessons

Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings

Afterschool Swim Lessons

The Stowe YMCA is excited to offer Red Cross progressive swim lessons to all Y Site (serving Ida Rankin, Catawba Heights, McAdenville, North Belmont) and Y Club (serving Mt. Holly Middle, Belmont Middle, Cramerton Middle) participants. This 8-week session, begins Wednesday Sept 9th from 5:15—6:00 pm.

Based on interest, transportation from other Y sites may be available.

Y Staff will take your child to the pool at 5:15 pm for their lesson.  Parents will pick up at the pool to discuss progress with their instructor.

Lifeguard & Water Safety Instructor Certifications

Red Cross Lifeguarding

Lifeguarding is an important lifesaving skill in every community. Complete a lifeguarding course available this at the Stowe YMCA with possible employment opportunities upon completion. The participant will receive life guarding, first aid, CPR for the professional rescuer, and Automated External Defibrillator.

Prerequisites — Mandatory swim test includes—300 yard swim (front crawl and breast stroke), jump in and swim 20 yards to retrieve and return a 10 lbs. brick, tread water with feet only for 2 minutes. Attendance mandatory at all session dates and 15 years  old by the date of the last class.

Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification

The purpose of the instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the Red Cross Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Waterfront Skills, Waterpark Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission courses and/or modules. Instructor candidates will also become familiar with Junior Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Management, Safety Training for Swim Coaches and Basic Water Rescue.

Water Safety Instructor Certification

Being safe in and around the water is an important skill to learn and share with others.  This class will prepare participants to teach swim lessons to children and adults as well as  other water safety courses. Possible employment opportunities upon completion.

Prerequisites — Swim various strokes for 25 yards, including butterfly, tread water for 1 minute. Participants must be 16 years old by the date of the last class

Home School Wellness

Join the Fun!

Join the Stowe Family YMCA for Home School Wellness! This is a twelve week program that provides active organized play in the pool for six weeks and in the gymnasium for six weeks.  During the program we will cover topics such as aquatic safety, nutrition, and importance of active play in a fun game-based environment.

Home School Wellness Parent Pass

The YMCA is here to support healthy living in our community. We encourage parents and guardians to focus on their health while their student participates in the Home School Wellness program. Visit the Member Services Desk to register for this offer valid from September 23rd to December 6th and allowing entry for one guardian to utilize the Stowe YMCA facilities between the hours of 1:00 and 2:00 pm on Wednesdays.


Fall Youth Soccer

Fall Youth Soccer

Join the Gaston County Family YMCA for Fall Soccer 2015. Our recreational league allows children to progressively develop their skills with smaller team sizes, professional practice plans for coaches, and more opportunities for each child than ever before.  We focus on family involvement, team building, confidence, and developing our core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.  Register online or download the form below.

Children ages 3 – 12 will play in the following leagues: Under 5, Under 7, Under 9, and Under 13 years old.  Registration is open until August 24th.  Late registration will result in a $10 late fee if space is available.

When and Where
Practice begins the week of August 31st, and games will follow beginning September 14th. Practice takes place twice weekly, either on Monday or Tuesday, and Saturday for one hour.  Starting September 14th, each weekday games will be game only, and on Saturdays, teams will get 30 minutes of practice before their game.  All practices and games will take place at the Pharr Family YMCA at 208 Main Street, McAdenville.

We need volunteer coaches in every age group.  Please consider coaching a team this season by indicating your interest on your registration form, and contacting Ben Oeser and completing a volunteer application.
  • Coaches Only Meetings: Tuesday, August 25th at the Stowe YMCA in Belmont:
    • U5 and U7 Coaches at 7:00 pm
    • U9 and U13 Coaches at 8:00 pm
Uniform Provided
All players will receive a uniform top and socks.  Your child will need shin guards as they are not provided.

Summer Camp


Camping, like many Y programs, is about learning skills, developing character and making friends. But few environments are as special as camp, where kids become a community as they learn both how to be more independent and how to contribute to a group as they engage in physical, social and educational activities.

The Gaston County Family YMCA offers four camp locations throughout the county during the 10-week summer following the Gaston County Schools calendar.

Ensuring A Brighter Future

The YMCA provides a quality, Christian-oriented experience that is safe, fun, and convenient. Y After School operates throughout Gaston County providing enrichment from school dismissal until 6:00 pm daily. During this time we aim to shape character by modeling, teaching, and reinforcing positive values to all students. The YMCA believes in the character development traits of Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Faith. The YMCA offers two on-site After School locations and fifteen off-site locations throughout the county.
