Safety Around Water

YMCA increases availability of water safety and swim lessons at no-cost to under-served communitie

Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1 to 14 years, claiming the lives of three children every day. At the Y, we believe a child’s safety in and around water should never be left to chance. Taking part in formal water safety classes reduces the risk of drowning among children and provides both education and awareness.

Research finds two primary factors for children not learning to swim: the parent’s ability and attitude toward swimming and the socio-economic conditions of the child’s community. Safety Around Water is the Y’s on-site water safety program that engages low-income youth living in local apartment and communities pools are often without lifeguards.

The 8-session Safety Around Water course, taught by certified YMCA swim instructors and lifeguards, teaches children basic water safety and swimming skills that reduce their risk of drowning and give them confidence in and around water. View our program information here.

How is Safety Around Water Impacting Gaston County?

Since the program launched in 2017, it has served more than 300 children across Gaston County. But we have so many more families in need.

This life saving program is designed to engage and educate parents about the importance of water safety skills and provide more of America’s youth access to water safety lessons. As part of the Y’s commitment to reduce drowning rates and keep kids safe in and around the water, the Gaston County Family YMCAs will provide support for swim instruction and water safety to children from under-served communities in our area.

Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity. The YMCA’s Safety Around Water program can help you make sure they learn essential water safety skills, which can open up a world of possibilities for them to satisfy their curiosity safely.

What do participants learn in Safety Around Water?

This 8-day course for ages 3-14 years, taught by a certified instructor, teaches children two sets of skills that will reduce the risk of drowning and give them confidence in and around water. A typical session includes:

  • Exercises to help children adjust to being in water
  • Instruction in “Jump, Push, Turn, Grab” and “Swim, Float, Swim,” two skill sets children can use if they unexpectedly find themselves in the water
  • An activity that teaches children about specific safety topics such as pool rules and boating safety
  • A fun game to encourage comfort and activity around water
  • Bus transportation may be available for participants with transportation needs. Contact us for to see if we can help.

Each lesson also includes valuable information for parents and caregivers with additional water safety tips.

PLUS, THERE’S ABSOLUTELY NO COST TO PARTICIPANTS TO ENROLL IN THIS LIFE SAVING PROGRAM!

Help prevent youth drowning by making a donation

Unfortunately, many kids don’t have basic swimming skills, and many times children are left unsupervised in apartment complexes around swimming pools. As the program continues to grow, we are determined to reach children at greatest risk and prevent youth drowning in our community.
